Why Family Medicine as a Specialty?

The real question is why not Family Medicine? I chose Family Medicine after going on a medical mission trip to Lima, Peru in 2014. It was there I realized that I didn’t want to be limited to who I provided care to, especially if I wanted to do international work in the future. For this, FM was the perfect specialty for me because of the opportunity to provide multi-generational care to a diverse patient population. I also like the preventative medicine aspect of FM, and being able to educate my patients and prevent medical diseases and complications. Lastly, there are many avenues I can take in FM, allowing for variety not only in the workplace but skill sets.

I chose MSM for 2 reasons! 1) The mission— I value MSM’s emphasis of serving the  underserved. I believe it’s populations like these that’s often gets overlooked. I know MSM will provide me with the tools necessary to address and therefore improve health disparities in my community. 2)The people—interview day/meet and greets/ second looks everyone was just really nice and relatable in some way. I laughed the most with the residents at MSM, and knew that they were colleagues that I would enjoy working with one day. I’m about a month into residency, and I can truly say I feel supported and I love it here!

Hobbies/Interests:

I enjoy playing all sorts of board/card games. So I will most certainly be in attendance at ALL game nights! I love watching The Game Show Network, specifically Family Feud. If time allows I also like playing volleyball. I enjoy any opportunity to be creative and love arts & crafts. I also enjoy traveling, and exploring new cities especially through food. Lastly, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and 6-month old Chorkie.

Family Medicine is one of med schools best kept secrets. The variety and autonomy that I have within family medicine is part of what attracted me to the specialty. Not only do I get to be involved in women's health, pediatrics, etc. But I can continue to reshape my career if I desire to. I can be a hospitalist, work in outpatient, run an urgent care, a rehab facility, and so much more. As a Primary Care Physician, I can tackle the disparities that aligned me with medicine in the first place. Family Medicine is the glue that holds it all together and I am empowered by the diversity in my field.

I really enjoy traveling and getting exposure to different cultures.  I have been to several countries in South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, as well as Australia.  I still have a bucket list of places I want to visit including South Africa, Greece, and Fiji.  Exercise is a big part of my life-work balance, but it also helps me balance my other love – FOOD.  I love trying new cuisines and breaking bread with family and friends over a good meal.  I am very active with my sons, Remiii and Riley.  You can find my husband Ron and I cheering for Remiii during baseball games in the spring and fall.

I chose family medicine because of how much it has to offer. I couldn't choose between caring for children or adults, so I chose both. Along those same lines, there is not one body system that I value over the other; all systems are working together for the whole and I value them all equally. Family Medicine is the only specialty that allows you to work with any population you desire, while also retaining every piece of knowledge that you've accumulated over the years to make the best decisions for your patients.

What I valued most when choosing a residency program was how that place made me feel. The love and support that runs through this program was very evident. I love anything outdoors (ie. river tubing, walks, sitting on the patio). Nature brings me so much peace.  I love art  (museums, art shows, painting classes, etc).
